Most clinicians were never taught how to talk about sex with their clients. That's a problem — and it's one we can fix.

Research shows that sexuality training is largely absent from graduate and professional programs, leaving even experienced clinicians underprepared to address one of the most fundamental aspects of human experience. Dr. Abbott's workshops are designed to change that.

Current Workshop

An Introduction to Sexual and Reproductive Health Competence for Mental Health Professionals

A foundational workshop for mental health and healthcare professionals — including psychologists, counselors, social workers, nurses, and others — who want to better serve clients with sexual and reproductive health concerns.

Participants will:

  • Develop a working understanding of sex, sexualities, sex-positivity, and sexual rights

  • Increase awareness of their own values and biases about sex and sexuality

  • Build skills to begin addressing clients' sexual and reproductive health needs in practice

  • Leave with curated resources for staying current on legislation and policy affecting sexual health

  • Receive access to Dr. Abbott's original clinical materials, including a sexual history intake form

Available virtually anywhere or in person in Lincoln/Omaha/Kansas City. Minimum 3 hours; length negotiable.

  • Nonreligious clients — atheists, agnostics, the "spiritual but not religious," and the religiously unaffiliated — represent a growing and frequently overlooked population in mental health practice. Yet most graduate training still treats religiousness as the default, leaving clinicians without a framework for providing affirming, culturally responsive care to clients for whom religion is not central — or is actively a source of harm.

    This workshop, grounded in Dr. Abbott's 2025 edited volume Culturally Responsive Mental Health Practice with Nonreligious Clients, equips mental health professionals with the knowledge and clinical tools to close that gap.

    Participants will:

    • Develop a nuanced understanding of nonreligious identities and why they matter clinically

    • Understand the influence of Christian Nationalism on the health of nonbelievers

    • Examine their own assumptions about religion, meaning-making, and wellbeing

    • Learn frameworks for conducting affirming intake and assessment with nonreligious clients

    • Gain practical tools for addressing religious trauma, family-of-origin conflict, and secular meaning-making in therapy

    • Leave with clinical resources, including case examples and discussion frameworks

  • Dr. Abbott is available for custom workshops and speaking engagements on topics related to sexuality, reproductive health, religion and mental health, and cultural responsiveness.
